Train to Teach

Forty Hill is the Lead School for a partnership comprised of several schools working  in conjunction with the London Diocesan Board for Schools School Centred Initial Teacher Training (LDBS SCITT) to recruit and train teachers on the School Direct Programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with the option of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).


What is School Direct?
School Direct is a school based route into teaching. As a School Direct trainee training with Forty Hill and our ITT provider, Teaching London, you’ll learn alongside inspiring, passionate teachers with outstanding pedagogical skills. We will train you to become successful, confident, effective teachers, well equipped to teach in a dynamic and vibrant London primary school. You will train here or in one of our partnership schools all within relative close proximity to Forty Hill but with varying needs and demographics. You will undertake entirely ‘on the job’ teacher training, allowing you to gain the qualifications and practical skills required to become a teacher.

Successful School Direct trainees will gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with the option to achieve a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) worth 60 Masters level credits.

Entry Requirements
We are seeking high quality graduates who can demonstrate a commitment to teaching as a career. You will need the following qualifications for entry to the programme:

• A degree, class 2:2 or higher, awarded by a UK university or a recognised equivalent qualification.
• GCSE English, Maths and Science at grade C or above or a recognised equivalent qualification.
• You must pass the professional skills tests in Literacy and Numeracy   

Classroom Experience
A commitment to undertake teacher training is a major step. As such it is important that applicants make this commitment based on a first-hand understanding of the rewards and challenges teaching brings. All applicants therefore need a minimum of two weeks relevant and recent experience in a primary school prior to interview.

Fitness to Teach
You will be required to complete a health questionnaire and satisfy Fitness to Teach requirements.

Disclosure and Barring Service
You will be required to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) barred list and criminal records check. A criminal record won’t necessarily prevent you from becoming a teacher though you will need to disclose any criminal convictions, cautions or bind-overs and agree to an enhanced criminal check. This enables us to identify those who are barred from working with children and vulnerable adults.

Eligibility to work and study in the UK
If you are not a British national you must ensure via the Home Office/UK Border Agency that you are eligible to work and study in the UK and, if necessary, have applied for and received all the required visas, permits and documentation to do so before your training begins.

Creativity and commitment – we want to recruit talented and creative individuals, with a passion for teaching and learning across the wide range of subjects taught in a primary school along with a desire to constantly improve their own practice. We believe these qualities will underpin the work of trainee teachers as they seek to challenge and excite their pupils and enable them to develop as confident, enthusiastic and effective learners.

Good communication skills – these are at the heart of effective teaching and all applicants are expected to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Stamina and determination – Teachers in schools know that teaching demands stamina and perseverance. We are looking for applicants who show a commitment to high standards and excellence, combined with the resilience and determination required to cope with the demands of the course and of teaching.

Good role models representative of the local population – We are very interested in all candidates whose applications demonstrate the qualities outlined above and who meet our selection requirements. We aim to recruit a range of good role models representative of the local population. We are also particularly keen to hear from experienced classroom assistants, professionals seeking a career change and those returning to work after a career break.


How to Apply
Candidates’ applications will only be accepted via UCAS:

You can search for us by name using the search function. After an initial screen to check you meet the minimum entry requirements your application will be read by an expert panel who will invite successful applicants to interview. The interview will take place here or in one of our partnership schools and is likely to include:
• teaching – potential trainees are asked to teach a brief lesson
• written tasks – designed to assess the quality of candidates’ written English and their understanding of current issues in education
• formal interview – panel interview with members of the selection panel

Candidates will be advised of the exact format of the interview in advance.

Applicants who are successful at interview will be offered a conditional place subject to meeting the standard conditions for entry on to an ITT programme.


What You Study
You will receive a comprehensive school based training programme along with a centre based taught programme delivered by Teaching London. Together, these will cover areas including:

Child Protection & Safeguarding
Theories of Learning
Religious Education
Behaviour for Learning
Effective Planning
Working with children with special needs
Voice work
Working with children with English as an additional language

The school based aspects will focus heavily on your professional development and will concentrate on the practical development of your subject knowledge and the craft of teaching. This includes observing other teachers, team-teaching, joint planning, meetings with mentors and subsequent discussion and analysis, subject based tasks and training in venues other than schools.


The PGCE is an internationally recognised and valued academic qualification. It demonstrates that you have critically engaged with the research and knowledge base which underpins professional practice. Some schools in the UK and many overseas insist that teachers from the UK have the PGCE rather than just QTS.


A link tutor from Teaching London will visit you at school regularly to observe your teaching. You will also be assigned a school-based mentor who will monitor and review your progress. This includes a commitment to a weekly mentor meeting, including a review of your progress and setting future targets, and regular observations of your teaching. You will receive regular feedback that will help you to build on your strengths and develop your skills in those areas in which you are less confident.

All trainee teachers must demonstrate that they have met the Teachers’ Standards in order to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). You will keep an electronic portfolio of evidence to show that you have done so.
